If you ask most people about Albania, they will talk about the summer beaches. But if you ask me? Winter is actually the best season to visit the mountains.
There is something about the crisp, fresh air (the mountains have really "fresh hair"!) and the stone villages that you just can’t experience in July. If you are wondering what to do in Albania in winter, the answer isn't to hide indoors—it’s to drive up to Voskopoje.
Based on my recent trip to the Korçë region, here is your guide to doing it right, featuring a real-life itinerary, driving tips, and the best traditional food I’ve tasted.
1. Visit Voskopoje
Forget the coast for a moment. My top recommendation for winter is Voskopoje, a historic village near Korçë. This isn't just a random stop; it is a destination with character.
The village itself feels unique because of the roads—many are paved with rocks (cobblestones), which preserves that old-world charm. It feels like stepping back in time.
2. Rent a Car
To truly enjoy this trip for your own convenience (commodity), you need to rent a car. Public transport won't give you the freedom you need here.
- The Drive: The roads are generally good, but as you approach the village, you will cross a bridge and head onto mountain roads.
- Expert Safety Tip: The one challenge I faced was the lighting. The mountain roads have very weak street lights. If you are driving at night, drive slowly and carefully. It gets pitch black, and safety comes first.
3. Stay Somewhere with a "Hoxhak"
I stayed at Hotel Akademia, and believe me, the drive up the mountain road to get there was worth it.
- The Atmosphere: This is where Albanian hospitality shines. The staff was incredibly welcoming.
- The Room: Ask for a room with a "Hoxhak" (Fireplace). There is nothing better than sitting near the fire to stay warm after a cold day outside.
- The View: At night, the view from the restaurant is stunning—it sets the perfect winter mood.
4. Eat Traditional
You cannot come to Korçë in winter and eat a salad. You need hearty, traditional food.
- The Highlight: The Byrek.
- The Difference: In many places, you get a single slice (a ration). At Hotel Akademia, they brought the byrek in a traditional Tave (pan). It’s hot, fresh, and meant to be shared.
- The Price: Winter prices here are generally better than the inflated summer prices at the seaside. You get luxury views and food for a fraction of the cost.
5. Experience "Serenate Korçare"
Winter in Albania isn't quiet—it’s festive. During my trip, I attended a concert featuring live music, specifically Serenate Korçare (traditional love songs from the region).
The music was so beautiful that people couldn't stay in their seats—everyone started dancing. It wasn’t a "show" for tourists; it was a genuine celebration.
The Essential "Mountain Winter" Packing List
Since you will be driving into the mountains where the weather can change quickly and the roads can be dark, you need to pack smart. Here is what I recommend based on my trip:
For the Car (Crucial for Self-Driving):
- Snow Chains: Even if the rental agency says the car has winter tires, ask for chains. The mountain roads near Voskopoje can get icy.
- Flashlight/Torch: Since the street lights on the mountain roads are weak, having a strong flashlight is helpful if you need to stop or check the car in the dark.
- Offline Maps: Download Google Maps for the Korçë/Voskopoje region ahead of time.
Clothing (Layers are Key):
- Thermal Base Layers: The air is cold! Wear thermals under your clothes.
- Wool Sweaters: Perfect for dining in the restaurant or sitting by the hoxhak.
- Sturdy Boots: You will be walking on cobblestones and rocks; leave the sneakers at home.
So, if you are debating when to visit, don't just wait for the summer sun. Hurry up and experience the mountains now—the fresh air, the warm fire, and the welcoming culture of Voskopoje are waiting for you.
