Do You Need an SUV in Albania? An Honest Answer

SUV albania

TL;DR: You need an SUV in Albania if you're heading to Theth, Valbona, or anywhere in the northern mountains. For the Albanian Riviera, Berat, Saranda, and most popular destinations, a standard car is perfectly fine, and cheaper.

Most car rental guides will tell you to "always go bigger." We won't. After thousands of bookings across Albania, here is a straight answer on when an SUV is genuinely worth it and when it isn't.

When You Actually Need an SUV in Albania

Theth and the Accursed Mountains

The road to Theth National Park is the clearest case. The final stretch after Shkodër climbs through narrow mountain passes with loose gravel, steep drops, and no guardrails on sections. In summer it's manageable in a standard car for an experienced driver, in spring, after rain, or if you want genuine peace of mind, a 4WD SUV is the right call.

Our VW Tiguan comes with 4Motion all-wheel drive, which makes a real difference on this specific road. It's not about comfort, it's about grip on loose surfaces and the ability to pull out of soft ground if needed. Read our full guide to driving to Theth before you go, regardless of which car you choose.

Valbona and the Northern Mountain Villages

The pattern repeats across the north: paved road for most of the route, then an unpaved final stretch to reach the actual village or trailhead. Valbona is the other main one. The road from Bajram Curri towards Valbona follows the river and is mostly fine, but the further you go toward the valley, the rougher it gets.

If your itinerary includes any mountain village in northern Albania, Vermosh, Theth, Valbona, or anywhere with a dirt track as the last kilometre, an SUV with real ground clearance removes a lot of uncertainty.

Unpaved Tracks to Remote Beaches and Sites

A handful of Albania's best spots sit at the end of unmarked dirt roads, Gjipe Beach near Himara being the most popular example. These are not extreme off-road routes, but a car scraping its underside on the approach ruins the mood. A crossover or SUV handles them without a second thought.

When You Don't Need an SUV

This is the more useful list for most travellers.

Albanian Riviera (Dhermi, Himara, Saranda, Ksamil): The SH8 coastal road is fully paved and in good condition. Any compact or economy car handles it fine, including the Llogara Pass. See our Tirana to Dhermi guide for the full route breakdown.

Berat, Gjirokastër, Butrint: All main roads, all paved. No terrain advantage from an SUV.

Saranda and the Blue Eye: The Blue Eye spring is one of the most searched attractions in Albania. The road there is paved and well-maintained, you do not need a 4x4 to get there.

Tirana city and airport: Obviously not. A smaller car is actually easier to park.

The honest answer is that if your trip stays on the main tourist route, Tirana, Riviera, Berat, Saranda; you'll spend more money on an SUV and feel no benefit from it.

Our SUV Fleet

If you've decided an SUV fits your trip, here's what we have:

VW Tiguan or similar — from €33/day The most practical choice for Albania's conditions. 4Motion AWD, good ground clearance, comfortable for four adults with luggage. This is the one we recommend for Theth and Valbona.

Kia Stonic or similar — from €45/day A compact crossover, higher ground clearance than a standard car, but not a full 4WD. Good for mixed routes: city driving, coastal roads, and the occasional rough track. Not what we'd recommend for the steepest mountain approaches.

Porsche Macan or similar — from €150/day AWD, premium interior, genuinely fast. If the drive itself is part of the experience and budget isn't a concern, this is a different kind of trip.

All cars come with unlimited kilometres, no deposit required, and we accept cash, credit, and debit cards.

Key Takeaways

  • Theth and Valbona: get an SUV. The roads justify it, especially outside peak summer.
  • Riviera, Berat, Saranda, Ksamil: a standard car is fine. Don't pay for capability you won't use.
  • The VW Tiguan (4Motion) is our main recommendation for northern mountain routes, confirmed AWD makes a difference on loose gravel and steep terrain.
  • The Kia Stonic works well for mixed trips with some rough roads but no extreme mountain tracks.
  • If you're unsure about your specific route, contact us before booking, we'll tell you honestly which car fits.
