Tirana Airport to City Center: Bus, Taxi & Rental Car Options (2026)

Tirana Airport to city center — bus, taxi and rental car options guide

TL;DR: You can get from Tirana Airport to the city center by bus (€4, 30 min), taxi (€22, 20 min), or rental car. The bus runs 24/7 every hour. Taxis are outside arrivals. If you plan to explore Albania beyond Tirana, picking up a rental car at the airport is the smartest move — TIC Rent Car delivers the car directly to the curb at no extra charge.

How Far Is Tirana Airport from the City Center?

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA) — also called Rinas Airport — sits 17 km northwest of Skanderbeg Square. In normal traffic the drive takes 20–25 minutes on the SH-60 highway. During morning and afternoon rush hours it can stretch to 45–60 minutes. For a full picture of traffic patterns, see our Tirana traffic guide.

If you are heading straight to the mountains after landing, our driving to Theth guide covers the full route north from Tirana.

Option 1 — Bus (Rinas Express)

The cheapest way to get into the city. The Rinas Express shuttle bus is operated by Luna Travel and runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every hour on the hour.

  • Cost: 400 LEK (€4) one way — cash or card
  • Journey time: 30–45 minutes depending on traffic
  • Drop-off point: Skanderbeg Square, city center
  • Where to find it: Exit arrivals, walk past KFC, follow signs to "Autobuses" — buses wait in parking bays 9 and 10

The bus is a solid option if you are staying in the city center and travelling light. It is not ideal if you have a lot of luggage, arrive during an odd hour, or plan to head straight out of Tirana toward the coast or mountains.

If you plan to spend a night or two in Tirana first, our Tirana parking map will help you find parking once you pick up a rental car later in your trip.

Option 2 — Taxi

Official airport taxis are operated by Auto Holiday Albania — yellow cars with the airport logo on the side, parked directly outside arrivals and available 24/7.

  • Cost: €22 flat rate to the city center
  • Journey time: 20–25 minutes
  • Payment: Cash preferred (LEK or Euros)

Avoid unofficial taxi drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Stick to the yellow official taxis outside arrivals, or use Bolt — the ride-hailing app works in Tirana and is typically cheaper than the official taxi rate.

Option 3 — Rental Car

If your trip includes any destination outside Tirana — the Albanian Riviera, Berat, Gjirokastër, Theth, Saranda — picking up a rental car at the airport is the most practical option. Public transport outside Tirana is limited and unreliable. A rental gives you complete freedom over your schedule and your route.

TIC Rent Car delivers your car directly to the curb at Tirana Airport — no shuttle to an off-site office, no queuing at a counter. You land, walk outside, and your car is waiting.

  • Cost: You pay only for the rental — no delivery fee, no deposit
  • What you need: Valid driving licence and passport
  • Accepts: Cash, debit card, or credit card

If you are planning a road trip south — Tirana to the Albanian Riviera, or all the way to Saranda — picking up at the airport and dropping off at your final destination makes far more sense than driving back to return the car. See our one-way car rental Albania guide for how that works.

Practical Tips for Arriving at Tirana Airport

Cash first. Bring some Euros or LEK for the bus or taxi — ATMs are available inside the terminal near the check-in counters if you need to withdraw on arrival.

Get a local SIM. SIM cards are available in the arrivals hall. A local data plan is useful for Google Maps, Bolt, and staying connected while driving around Albania.

Plan around rush hours. If your flight lands between 07:30–10:00 or 15:30–18:00, expect longer journey times into the city. Check the live Tirana traffic map before you set off.

Fuel up early. If you pick up a rental car, there are petrol stations on the SH-60 highway shortly after leaving the airport — fill up before entering the city. If you are heading south after picking up the car, the Tirana to Albanian Riviera road trip is the most popular first-day route — it takes you through Vlora and over the Llogara Pass to the coast.
