Tirana to Saranda: Distance, Drive Time & Best Route (2026)

tirana to saranda

TL;DR: Driving from Tirana to Saranda takes 4–5 hours via the fast inland route (through Fier, Tepelenë, and past Gjirokastër) or 5–6+ hours on the scenic coastal road through Vlorë and the Albanian Riviera. Roads are paved and in good condition on both routes. A regular car is fine — no SUV needed.

How Long Does It Take to Drive from Tirana to Saranda?

The distance from Tirana to Saranda is approximately 265–280 km depending on which route you choose. There are two main options:

  • Inland route (faster): Tirana → Durrës → Fier → Tepelenë → Gjirokastër → Saranda. About 265 km, 4–5 hours of driving time.
  • Coastal route (scenic): Tirana → Durrës → Fier → Vlorë → Llogara Pass or Tunnel → Dhërmi → Himarë → Saranda. About 280 km, 5–6 hours minimum — realistically a full day if you stop to enjoy the Riviera.

Both routes share the same road from Tirana to Fier. The split happens south of Fier: inland toward Tepelenë, or southwest toward Vlorë and the coast.

Google Maps will tell you 4 hours. Budget at least 5. Albanian roads are well-paved but you will hit slower traffic through towns like Fier and Lushnjë, and overtaking opportunities are limited on single-lane stretches. If you're a foreign visitor, check our guide on whether visitors can drive in Albania — short answer: yes, with your home licence.

Route 1: The Fast Inland Route (Recommended if Short on Time)

This is the most direct route and the one the Tirana–Saranda buses use.

The route: Tirana → Durrës → Kavajë → Rrogozhinë → Lushnjë → Fier → Tepelenë → Këlcyrë → Gjirokastër bypass → Saranda

Road conditions: Good throughout. The Tirana–Fier stretch is mostly motorway-grade highway. After Fier, the road narrows to a two-lane national road through the Vjosa Valley — still well-paved, but slower because of the winding terrain and occasional trucks. The final stretch from the Gjirokastër bypass down to Saranda follows the SH99, a smooth descent through the mountains to the coast.

Fuel stops: There are petrol stations regularly along the Tirana–Fier highway. After Fier, fuel stations become less frequent — fill up in Fier or Tepelenë to be safe.

Worth stopping at:

  • Tepelenë — a quick coffee stop by the Vjosa River. The town sits at the confluence of the Vjosa and Drinos rivers and is the birthplace of Ali Pasha of Ioannina.
  • Gjirokastër — if you have an extra 2–3 hours, this UNESCO World Heritage town is absolutely worth a detour. The castle, the bazaar, and the Ottoman-era houses are some of Albania's finest cultural sites. It's only a 15-minute detour off the main road.
  • Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) — located on the SH99, roughly 22 km from Saranda. If you haven't visited yet, the turn-off is clearly signposted. Read our full Blue Eye driving guide →

Route 2: The Scenic Coastal Route via the Albanian Riviera

This is one of Europe's most spectacular coastal drives. If you have a full day and want to experience the Riviera, take this route.

The route: Tirana → Durrës → Fier → Vlorë → Llogara Pass (or Tunnel) → Palasë → Dhërmi → Jalë → Himarë → Qeparo → Borsh → Saranda

Road conditions: The Tirana–Vlorë section is highway-grade and fast. The Vlorë bypass opened in 2022, so you no longer need to drive through Vlorë city centre — though you can detour in if you want to stop. After Vlorë, the road becomes a two-lane coastal road. It is fully paved and in good condition (recently resurfaced in many sections), but winding — especially the Llogara Pass section if you choose to drive over the mountain.

The Llogara Pass vs. Llogara Tunnel:

You now have two options to cross the Ceraunian Mountains between Vlorë and the Riviera:

  • Llogara Pass (scenic): The classic mountain road, climbing to 1,027 metres with dramatic switchbacks and panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. The road is fully paved and in good condition, but demanding — tight hairpins, no guardrails in some sections, and not recommended in rain, fog, or at night. Allow 45–60 minutes from Orikum to Palasë. Make sure you know what to do if you have an accident in a rental car before tackling mountain roads.
  • Llogara Tunnel (fast): A 6 km tunnel that opened in 2024, cutting the crossing from 30+ minutes to about 7 minutes. The toll for cars is 250 ALL (~€2.50) one way, or 500 ALL (~€5) round trip, as officially confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku. Carry cash in LEK — card payment availability at the toll gates has not been confirmed.

Our tip: Drive over the Llogara Pass one way (ideally heading south, for the best views) and take the tunnel on the return trip. That way you get the scenery without having to do the switchbacks twice.

Worth stopping at along the Riviera:

  • Llogara Pass viewpoints — several pull-over spots on the descent toward Palasë with views of the entire Riviera coastline below. There are restaurants at the top of the pass with outdoor terraces.
  • Dhërmi — one of Albania's most famous beaches. The water is crystal clear and the beach is long. Good for a swimming stop or lunch.
  • Jalë Beach — a quieter alternative to Dhërmi, with a more relaxed vibe.
  • Porto Palermo — the Ottoman-era castle of Ali Pasha sits on a small peninsula in a protected bay. Easy to spot from the road, and the detour takes 10 minutes.
  • Himarë — a pleasant coastal town with a good selection of restaurants and a beachfront promenade. Makes a natural lunch stop if you started from Tirana in the morning.
  • Borsh — Albania's longest beach (about 7 km). Less developed than Dhërmi or Himarë, and worth a stop if you prefer quieter beaches.

Do You Need an SUV?

No. Both routes to Saranda are fully paved and in good condition. A standard compact or mid-size car is perfectly fine. The only reason to consider a 4x4 or SUV is if you plan to go off-route into mountain villages or unpaved back roads — read more about the advantages of SUVs for Albanian roads.

Fuel and Driving Costs

A full trip from Tirana to Saranda will use approximately 20–25 litres of petrol in a standard car (depending on your speed and the route). At current Albanian fuel prices, budget around €30–40 for fuel one way. Looking for a cheap car rental in Albania? Rental prices start from around €20–25/day.

If you take the Llogara Tunnel, factor in the toll fee on top of fuel costs.

There are no other road tolls on either route to Saranda. And if you're worried about payment — TIC Rent Car requires no deposit, and you can rent a car without a credit card.

Parking in Saranda

Saranda's waterfront promenade has some paid parking spots, but they fill up fast in summer. Most hotels and guesthouses offer free parking for guests. If you're visiting for the day, arrive early or park on the streets behind the main promenade — parking is generally free in the residential blocks a few minutes' walk from the seafront.

In peak season (July–August), parking in Saranda's centre becomes genuinely difficult. Consider parking on the outskirts and walking in. If you're also spending time in the capital, check our Tirana parking map for the best spots before you leave.

Practical Tips for the Drive

  • Leave early. If you're taking the coastal route, leave Tirana by 8 AM at the latest to have enough daylight for stops along the Riviera. Tirana traffic can be heavy in the morning rush, so factor that in.
  • Don't drive at night. Street lighting is limited outside major cities, and the mountain roads (especially Llogara Pass) are not safe after dark.
  • Watch for overtaking. Albanian driving can be aggressive — is it safe to rent a car in Albania? Yes, but you need to stay alert. You will encounter cars overtaking on blind corners, especially on the Fier–Tepelenë stretch. Drive defensively and read our driving tips for tourists before you go.
  • Fill up in Fier or Vlorë. Fuel stations are less frequent on both routes after these towns.
  • Cash is king. Smaller petrol stations, the Blue Eye parking lot, and some restaurants along the route only accept cash (LEK). ATMs are available in Fier, Vlorë, Himarë, and Saranda.
  • Download offline maps. Mobile data coverage is good on both routes, but can drop in the mountain sections between Tepelenë and Gjirokastër or along some stretches of the Riviera coast.
  • Check entry requirements. If you're visiting Albania for the first time, read what you need to travel to Albania before your trip.
