Tirana to Dhermi: Bus, Taxi or Rental Car?

tirana to dhermi

TL;DR: Dhermi is 183 km from Tirana — a 3h 15m drive. The bus runs 3 times a day and costs around €8, but drops you on the main road with no way to reach the beach independently. A taxi costs €117–148 one way. A rental car from €20–25/day gives you total freedom on the Llogara Pass, access to Dhermi's beaches, and the ability to explore the entire Albanian Riviera at your own pace.

Dhermi is one of the most beautiful villages on the Albanian Riviera — turquoise water, white pebble beaches, and a dramatic descent from the Llogara Pass that stops most visitors in their tracks. Getting there from Tirana is straightforward, but the transport option you choose will significantly affect your experience once you arrive.

How far is Tirana from Dhermi?

The drive from Tirana to Dhermi is 183 km and takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes in normal conditions. In peak summer (July–August), expect 30–45 minutes extra due to heavier coastal traffic south of Vlorë. From Tirana Airport directly, the drive is slightly shorter — around 2 hours and 52 minutes.

The route is the same regardless of transport: Tirana → Durrës → Fier → Vlorë → Llogara Pass → Dhermi.

Option 1 — By bus

Cost: ~€8 (1,000 Lekë) one way Journey time: 3h 30min – 4h 30min Departures: 3 times daily from Tirana's Regional Bus Terminal (Terminali Lindor) Operators: Olgeno Travel, RivieraBus

Taking the bus is the cheapest option. Tickets cost around 1,000 Lekë (€8) and the journey takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic and stops. There are three departures per day — the earliest leaves at 5:30 AM, which means arriving in Dhermi mid-morning before the heat peaks.

The catch: The bus drops you at the Dhermi bus stop on the main SH8 coastal road — at the top of the village, not at the beach. Dhermi's beaches and most accommodation are down a steep hill. If your guesthouse doesn't offer a shuttle, you will need a taxi for the final stretch. Cash only on Albanian buses.

There is no direct bus from Tirana Airport to Dhermi. You must first travel to the city terminal — for options on that transfer, see our guide to getting from Tirana Airport to the city center.

Best for: Solo budget travellers with light luggage and flexible timing.

Option 2 — By taxi or private transfer

Cost: €117–148 from Tirana city / €135 from Tirana Airport (official airport taxi) Journey time: 3h – 3h 30min

A taxi gets you door to door with no transfers and no luggage issues. The official Tirana Airport taxis charge a fixed €135 to Dhermi. From the city, private taxis and transfer services typically quote €117–148 depending on the operator. Split across four passengers, this becomes competitive — but as a solo or couple, it is expensive.

The catch: You pay the same rate back, meaning a return taxi trip costs €230–300 total. For a multi-day stay where you want to explore beaches beyond Dhermi — Drymades, Gjipe Canyon, Himara — you are stuck without transport unless you book taxis each time.

Best for: Groups of 3–4 wanting the most direct transfer, or travellers arriving late at night.

Option 3 — By rental car (recommended)

Cost: From €20–25/day + ~€35 fuel (full return trip) Journey time: 3h 15min Pickup: Free delivery to Tirana Airport or city center

A rental car is the best option for Dhermi — not just for the journey, but for the entire stay. The beach road into Dhermi is steep and winding. Drymades Beach is a 10-minute drive south. Gjipe Beach requires a short hike from a roadside parking area. Himara is 20 minutes away. None of these are accessible by bus, and taxiing to each one adds up quickly.

The Llogara Pass — the mountain section just before the descent to Dhermi — is one of Albania's most scenic drives. At 1,027 metres above sea level, the views over the Ionian Sea are extraordinary. This stretch alone is reason enough to drive rather than take the bus.

For this route, we recommend an automatic SUV or crossover. The descent from the pass to Dhermi village is steep with tight bends, and the village roads are narrow. For more on why SUV clearance matters on Albanian coastal roads, see our guide to the advantages of SUV rentals in Albania.

With Tic Rent A Car, there is no deposit required, free delivery to Tirana Airport, and the option to drop the car one way if you plan to continue south rather than return to Tirana. See one-way car rental options here.

Best for: Anyone staying more than one night in Dhermi, couples, families, and anyone wanting to explore the Riviera beyond one beach.

The Llogara Pass — what to expect

The Llogara Pass (Qafa e Llogarasë) sits at 1,027 metres and is the dramatic highlight of this drive. After the flatlands of Fier and Vlorë, the road climbs sharply through pine forest before opening to panoramic views of the Albanian Riviera stretching south. There is a rest stop at the summit with a restaurant and souvenir shops — worth a 15-minute stop.

The descent from the pass to Dhermi is steep — around 10 km of switchbacks with sheer drops on one side. It is not difficult for a confident driver, but take it slowly if you are unfamiliar with mountain roads. In wet conditions, allow extra time. An automatic car makes this section noticeably more comfortable.

Note on the Llogara Tunnel: A tunnel bypassing the highest section of the pass is under development. As of 2026 the pass road remains the main route — check local updates before your trip as this may change the drive profile in future years.
